The Coronavirus Epidemic
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is closely monitoring an outbreak of a novel coronavirus first identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. Chinese authorities identified the new coronavirus, which has resulted in thousands of confirmed cases in China.
50 Million Chinese citizens are restricted to their communities in the region of Hubei Province. Chinese authorities are rushing to build hospitals to treat affected individuals in view of rapidly increasing numbers of affected individuals who are severely ill and an escalating number of deaths,132 as of January 29. The virus has rapidly spread to other communities within China and regional countries including Japan.
Transmission of the virus is apparently person to person. The prodromal period prior to onset of acute symptoms is up to two weeks. High intensity isolation is necessary when a case is identified. The US currently has 5 documented cases who are in hospitals. CDC is monitoring incoming travelers at 20 US airports. Currently the risk of infection in the US is very low.
